| LORENZO BEGALI
|
| A small estate of 6 ha to the northwest of Verona, almost hidden halfway up the side of a hill, which is renowned for giving superb grapes for Recioto. Sig. Begali has been growing and processing his own grapes since only five years, but his efforts are backed by a lifetime of work and experience in the area. He is a grower who is committed to keeping the fruit and finesse from being diluted, by inferior grapes during vinification.

60% Corvina 30% Rondinella 10% Molinara
Valpolicella is produced from the same mix of grapes as Bardolino; Corvina [the most important, between 55 to 70 percent]; Rondinella [25 to 30%] and Molinara [up to 15%] but with more colour, depth, sturdiness and flavour.
Classico comes from the heart of this region in North East Italy and always makes the best wines this is no exception.
A wonderful throwback to old fashioned Valpolicella this wine has a good rich depth of brown-red colour with a first class bouquet full of fruit. Hints of cherries, almonds and with a touch of sweetness tease your sense of smell. The palate is positive and direct with all of the above showing well coupled with a medium bodied texture.
This wine belies the oft held belief that Valpolicella can only make lightweight wine.
Richard Bampfield MW:
Warm, Savoury, mildly tarry aromas, hints of black cherries. Lively soft fruit on the palate, cherry tones to the fore. Easy drinking but with enough grip to give good length.

Valpolicella Classico DOC Superiore Vigneto La Cengia '98

60% Corvina 30% Rondinella 10% Molinara
Superiore means that the wine has an extra degree of alcohol and this combined with first class winemaking has produced one of the best Valpolicellas that Ive tasted in many a year.
The full pungent nose bursts out of the glass and hits you with raspberries, black cherries and a deep rich earthiness, reminiscent of the Gout de Terroire of some of the better wines of the world. An unexpected delight!
The palate is a great mouthful of flavour with the fruit really showing well. A long lasting taste means that this will be an excellent wine with most rich foods or red meats.
Richard Bampfield MW:
Vivid lifted aromas, sweet, vanillary oak in the background. Lovely, juicy fruit on the palate, lent considerable depth by the well-balanced use of new oak. Surprisingly flavoursome example of a Valpolicella.

Recioto is so called because the grapes come from the ears, the recie [from orecchie], those at the outermost of each cluster that receive the maximum sunshine. These berries are hand picked, then dried on mats [sometimes for up to three months] before pressing into musts that can make either sweet [Recioto] or, when the sugar is all converted during fermentation to alcohol, the dry Recioto Amarone, which can be one of Italys most distinguished wines.
The Begali is definitely one of the very best! Deeply coloured purple, almost black in intensity, with a strong velvety sweet nose. Raisins and honey come through on the bouquet in addition to the fabulous earthy undertones. This richness and smoothness follows on the palate to linger for a long, long time. Delicious!
Full of character this Amarone goes with any rich meal, strong cheese or even the occasional dessert. It also benefits from being allowed to breathe sometimes, if you can resist, a day will show this wine to its best.
Richard Bampfield MW:
Deep colour, showing development. Rich, porty aromas, oozing with spice, cherry, damson and liquorice. Rich, full bodied, superbly balanced and showing deft new oak. Carries the alcohol with ease.

Monte CaBianca is an individual vineyard and this wine shows the benefit of that individuality. More delicate and subtler than the standard 95 Amarone it still shows an immense concentration of berry-like fruit on the nose. The colour is an intense deep purple and the raisin like hints are their but will come out more so in the next few years. On the palate it is somewhat lighter, more delicate than the standard Amarone but still has a great long lasting, lingering finish. Worth buying a bottle or three and putting aside for those special celebrations when there are just a few select friends to share this with. Absolutely delicious!
